day 8

We spent the morning with Rosemary and Joan at the market, buying flour from one stall, beans from another and sweet potatoes from a third. Our team of crazy Muzungus created quite the scene in the “bowels” of Kampala, especially when we decided to climb on top of the sacks of food that had been loaded into the back of a rickety truck and ride through the narrow streets of the crowded marketplace. Rosemary goes through this buying ritual once a week. It involves a lot of smart bargaining, difficult navigations through swarming crowds and a tolerance for the heat. After a couple of hours, the task was complete, and the food was driven up to the orphanage. It is enough to feed the children for a week.

The rest of our day consisted of art projects, play therapy, painting the third of four dormitories and the installation of a basketball goal. The children are loving the volleyball court and now are so excited to have the opportunity to play basketball, as well. All of you who donated games, puzzles and the like will be pleased to know that they are all being put to very good use, and that seven year old Tina is now the master of “Go Fish.”

I asked Rosemary if the orphans are looked down upon by the other students at the school. She told me that since Change the Truth has come into their lives, they are now admired and often even envied by the kids who have parents. A few of the orphaned children who were supposed to go home with their guardian over this holiday break actually decided they would rather stay at SMK so that they could fully enjoy the programs being offered them by our team!

And they are beaming really.

So are we.
