kampala photos

As I said, Kampala is a pretty city, set on seven hills. The city centre is located on the hill called Nakasero, one of the nicer areas of town, where most of the better hotels, embassies, government buildings and international aid organizations are located. This is a view from our hotel.

Between Nakasero and the lower, grittier part of the city is the main drag, Kampala Rd... lots of shops, restaurants, and, as you can see here, vendors with their wares spread out in front of them.

There are also many, many children hanging out on the street, most of them with their hand extended. They are on their own, no adults anywhere to be seen. A lot of these kids are orphans. Many of them live on the streets.

Just as New York and Venice have pigeons, Kampala has these unbelievably large, often low swooping storks that inhabit the city. You do not want to be under one of these guys when they need to relieve themselves. They hang out on tall signs and buildings, light posts and trees.

These signs are all over the place... get a lover, get a housegirl. I assume there is a sex slave trade going on in many parts of Uganda.

Last, but not least, my favorite mode of transportation! These are called boda-bodas because they were originally used to shuttle people between border posts.

Tomorrow's post will feature photos from the village in Rakai. Til then...
