twins revisited

This is for those of you who did not have a chance to see my recent exhibition, "Can You See Me Now?"

Here are the diptychs entitled "Twins Revisited." I've completed nine so far and plan to continue the project this fall. It's been nice reconnecting with these twins, and I've really appreciated their willingness to be photographed again. The original images were made in 2004 or 2005; the most recent ones were made this year.

I'd like to keep some of my most recent work a secret until the show opens, but I can't resist sharing at least one brand new piece here on the blog. You may recall that I traveled to central Kansas recently to update two of twins portraits. I was really pleased with both, but especially this one of Derrick and Dustin (2005/2013).

road trip!

"No place is boring, if you've had a good night's sleep and have a pocket full of unexposed film."

This quote by photographer Robert Adams is running through my mind this morning as I pack for a quick road trip to central Kansas. I have a date this afternoon with Derrick and Dustin and early this evening with Carrie and Angie (in Smolan and Lindsborg respectively). I haven't seen them since I photographed them for my twins project back in 2005. We'll do an update of those pictures for the "Twins Revisited" project I'm working on now.

I love hittin' the road. Who knows what I'll find along the way today and tomorrow? I may not have any unexposed film in my pocket, but I do have lots of CF cards and extra charged batteries!

twins revisited

In 2004 and 2005 I photographed identical twins for a series I called "The Space Between."

Aren't we all fascinated with the way people change over the years? "The Brown Sisters" by Nicholas Nixon has always been one of my favorite photographic series. Once a year, for more than twenty-five years now, he has photographed his wife and her three sisters grouped together in the same order, with a similar background; it gives the viewer the opportunity to marvel at how time has changed the women - and ultimately, of course, how time changes each one of us.

I've decided to revisit some of the twins I photographed eight years ago and make updated portraits. I hope to complete at least eight or ten diptychs for my show in May. I don't want to share all of them here (I'd like to have a few surprises at the exhibition!) but can't resist sharing the first two I've done.

Here are "Brian and Andrew" and "Martha and Mary." Incredibly, I was able to photograph them in the exact same locations as before.
